Punthuk Setumbu is the name of a hill located about 4 km west of Borobudur Temple. The hill located in the village of Karangrejo is one of the best places to see the splendor of Borobudur Temple in the morning as well as to wait the sunrise behind Mount Merapi. There are various ways to reach the hill with an altitude of 400 m above sea level, such as by walking, riding a bike, or riding motorcycles. Having not recognized the field well, I choose to rent private car. Exactly at 4:30 am, traveling through the morning cold air began. At the time, the sky was partly cloudy, so it seemed that there was no star as a light. Street lights were totally invisible, by private car lights were the only source of light. After 15 minutes traveling in the dark and slippery, I was arrived at the foothill of Punthuk Setumbu Hill. Punthuk Setumbu Hill manager who guarded the post welcomed and lent us a flashlight, the real adventure began.

I was climbed a steep path through the field in the middle of the dark, cold, and wet morning. The combination of the wind that hit the tops of trees and insects that creak an orchestra was accompanying the morning trip. Dew dripping from the trees made the trail slippery, therefore, we should step carefully in order not to slip. I was finally stepped on the top of Punthuk Setumbu Hill with wheezing.

I struggle apparently was not wasted because of the stunning views have welcomed. As far as the eyes could see, the blue stretch of the valley covered in mist was visible. Although looking small, Borobudur Temple gracefully fell asleep in a sea of dark fog, surrounded by mountain ranges and mighty hills. After some time, the fog began to fade due to strong winds continuously blew, a burst of light began to appear presenting beautiful Borobudur Sunrise. When the weather is sunny, golden orange rays of light would be racing to color the sky and the sun slowly rises from behind of its throne. Nirvana Sunrise nickname for Punthuk Setumbu fells even more attached.

Tulus was a great guide. I contacted him to set up the trip and he was very quick with a response. He was willing to be flexible and create a custom trip. His price was also competitive. As the trip got closer, he confirmed the details and was waiting for me as planned, even though my flight was late. We finished our tour early and he even booked a last minute massage for me instead of dropping me off early. I highly recommend Tulus.

Tulus was a great guide, friendly, reliable, knowledgeable, with good level of English and very responsive via email and whatsapp. We arranged with him three final leg of our trip – 4 full days packed with activities – airport pick up, Borobudur sunrise and visit temple, Dieng plateau area and visit area ( color lake view, temple complex), Sikunir hill sunrise view, Prambanan temple and Ratu Boko for sunset view, Jomblang Cave and merapi tour, sightseeing Yogyakarta and drop off at airport. All in all highly recommendable, reasonably priced and very friendly and reliable.

Highly recommended tour guide and driver when visiting Yogyakarta

Memorable trip to Yogyakarta

Tulus was an amazing tour guide. He was very knowledgeable about history, Hinduism, and Buddhism and he spoke excellent English. He also took very good care of us for the two days that we were in town, whether taking us to the best currency exchange or the airport in a rush.
